Finding Inspiration

Being a Mummy is the best job in the world....however I am really missing creating beautiful bouquets.

I have just finished my last bespoke order of the year, and I have loved every minute of making it.

I have been looking back at my work, and I had forgotten about this beauty....I love the soft colours, feathers and those stunning mother of pearl buttons.

My shop is calling me to fill it, now I just to find some time in between feeds, playing and being like a love sick school girl!

The Hidden Secrets

In the beautiful world of Vintage items, there is always something that surprises you....

...These feathers are no exception....I found them a couple of months ago, it is a rare find; vintage showgirl feathers, so I bought without looking very hard at them. Last night I started on a bouquet I have been looking forward to...my best friends, soon to be wife...I knew these feathers would be perfect...then I looked again at them....well I was amazed....

these are huge feathers....doubled up and sewn together. but as I took them apart I discovered that in order to make the feather longer they had knotted another feather to each strand...can you believe that...EVERY STRAND hand knotted....WOW....firstly who would have done this? A small child? A tiny handed lady? I cant imagine there is a machine that would be able to do this?

Nearer the top of the feathers the bottom strands were doubled up and one strand knotted on top of them....this really does blow my mind....I love fiddly jobs but this is crazy!! and just how long would it take to create one feather?

Nothing ceases to amaze me in this world of vintage....workmanship, attention to detail, beauty and tiny hands....I think I was born in the wrong era!!
It also reminds me why I love to use vintage items in my bouquets...the history and stories they create are priceless!

Dreaming of Holland

{an old man collecting fire wood in the snow}

The last time we where in Holland was for Sinterklaas which was a first for me, and we enjoyed ourselves  so much in the snow and festive fun. But there is always the moment when we have to come home.....

....In a way I look forward to this, not because I have had enough, or miss home....but because at Schiphol Airport there is a mini art gallery.....It normally has around 15 stunning pictures from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A true delight for delayed or tired traveler....or just a happy little Magpie and Wonderful Dutchman who need to fill time waiting for their plane.

The painting of the lady was my favorite. she was holding a huge feather and wearing the most breathtaking ring.... I didn't take a note of the painter or the subject, I was too captured by her to pay the little box of writing any attention.

I also adore these paintings where you can see a slice of Dutch life....a maid peeling potatoes for dinner....birds in the courtyard swooping low....while a caged bird looks on.

Colour, perspective, and detail are all so wonderfully Dutch....and their Paintings always make my heart sing with joy and happiness.

I wish you all a wonderfully joyous weekend

All these buttons will be lovingly wired and find a home in one of Vintage Magpie's Divinely Decadent Bouquets.....will it be yours???

(P.S I made this cute bowl on my hen do....and think it is a wonderful....polka dots are a firm favorite of this Magpie!!)

I adore this soft cornflower blue in these wired flowers....do they fit your colour theme?

I'm feeling the lovely feel of Spring and it is making me very creative...our flat is basked in glorious sunshine...the first of the year...blue skies and chatty sparrows on the beech hedge, are what I can see from my window.....

Inside there is beautiful flowering blossom
J'adore Spring!!

Are you feeling the beauty of the season?

A night at the Theatre

The Wonderful Dutchman and I went to see War Horse on Saturday at The New London Theatre....

It was the first time we have been to the theatre together!! An experience I hope to regularly repeat.
War Horse was stunning. My mind worked overtime taking all the amazing horses in. They are handspring puppets...life size horses, handled by 3 breathtaking men and women; Head, Heart and Hind!
Originally a book by Michael Morpurgo, about the forgotten horses in WW1.

The production was beautiful...the work that must have gone into researching the movements of the animals, even down to the tails swishing, and the ear twitching. And then to make puppets that possess all these qualities....stunning, wonderful, and very moving.

....The goose was hilarious!!
If you get the chance to see it, I couldn't recommend it enough!

Oh to have a 26" waist!

The perfect colour for our wedding

When I was around 11 I remember going down to our local Antique shop. It was called Miss Havershams... It was a shop of wonders...

...I bought the most delicate and enchanting beaded purse from her. I loved it...I had no use for it, I could hardly go out with it in my jeans or take it to school, but it fascinated me. All the work that had gone into it, something so small. I believe that is where it all began, the love of Vintage, the love of quality...the love of detail...the love of Sparkle!

Can you imagine my delight when having a browse on Esty I found these! All from Timeless Vixen Vintage...oh my! Yummy!!

Look at the work that goes into one of these gorgeous dresses

So after measuring my waist (!) I discovered, dear reader; it really wasn't a shock, that my post Christmas tummy would have to deflate a considerable amount... and that this might not be a possible option in time for our wedding...but a magpie can dream!

So I therefore order you, if you waist is lovely and slim, to hop right over there and BUY BUY BUY!!! I'm jealous and quietly seething... but I wouldn't blame you!

My Aim for 2010

I have made myself a little blog promise... I am going to TRY and post everyday...phew this could be tough, but it is my aim for 2010.

As much as I would love it to be all about Vintage Magpie Bouquets, I really don't think that is going to be possible. So I will be posting about my plans for our wedding and what lovely things I have been lucky enough to come across on the wonderful World Wide Web.

This hopefully will give you lovely bloggers new and exciting things to inspire your beautiful minds!

Claudes colour inspiration

"Colour is my day-long obsession, joy and torment." ~Claude Monet~
"Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love." ~Claude Monet~

Today I wish I was sitting in front of this work of art.
Inspiration, Colour, Lightness, Simplicity.... Divine.

(The Tate Modern strongly disagree in photo taking.... but Monet stole my heart... no flash used...no harm caused....no-one looking! ;) )

A Tranformative Moment...Forgiveness

Steven over at The Golden Fish is having 'A Transformative Moment' Meme. He is asking readers to tell each other about a moment that transformed you, your life, your views.

I have been thinking about this for some time...I know the moment...but do I dare to share it? Do I dare to open it up in my lovely happy blog? Then I read Titusthedogs moment...

She was my inspiration...

This piece of writing was written on a secret blog...somewhere I could express myself personally... it was my therapy.

"Can you forgive and forget? Will forgiving a person make you feel better? or is forgiveness a form of weakness?

I was in a relationship with an older man, who was at the start wonderful, things were rosy. He seemed like a fun, handsome, run of the mill type of guy. We moved in together quite quickly, and all as good. But once you scratched the surface, all was dark and worrying.

He had spent 15 years in the Army, and fought in Iraq. Seen things no-one should have to see. But like too many people who have seen war, didn't get, or was offered any help after to help him understand or cope with the horror.

He would have vivid dreams, wake covered in sweat, screaming, the pain relived in sleep. There was no escape. I tried to help, but as I have now come to understand, and with a great deal of hindsight, I could never really help. He needed to get help - He needed to want it...In simple terms the boy was messed up.

He went into the army to escape and he had been running from his problems long before I ever set eyes on him. No amount of me wanting to help him was going to make him change. He just hid behind walls of secrets and stories.

It turns out he was controlling, hurtful, but most of all he was angry. Angry with himself, angry with his life, the lies, angry that he was just like the man he despised. He didn't know when to back down, he had no control, and the anger was always present when drink was. Take away the drink and you saw a glimpse of the kind, quiet, sensitive, loving man - the man I fell in love with.

A lot happened in our relationship, most not so happy, but I hoped he would change, that I could help him change, and with time things would get better. Until you have walked in my shoes you wont begin to understand it - how love can make you blind.

Things came to an end, when my family saw and experienced the angry man lurking behind the wall. All my family saw what was going on behind closed doors. I was humiliated, and so very sad, but I knew no amounts of "sorry's" would work, and that I could never take him back. He had worn me down, but I knew I would be a fool to not see this as the moment to walk away.

It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. but I couldn't carry on being in this abusive environment. I was bombarded with calls, text messages, letters. He would follow me home from work to try and talk to me. My mobile constantly on silent because it would ring off the hook. True to form he got angry, threats were made and the police called, it was all so ugly. Then one day it stopped, it was like he vanished into the night, which to be honest is a nice way of saying that he ran away, from the pain, the heartache, off to be behind that wall again.

Even though he had put me through pain and suffering, the only way I could move on was to forgive him. If you forgive you can get over it, move on with your life. The weight lifted, the pain eased.

I understand that it was him, not me who did wrong. He was still this messed up little boy, who never got over the horror and pain of his childhood, who went on to live only more horror. I feel sorrow for that boy, sadness about his inability to accept and seek help. Therefore I forgive him. Thank him for showing me that first you must love yourself, before you can love anyone else.

So Thank you. I wish with all my heart that you are now happy. I forgive you and I understand. Thank you for teaching me this wonderful lesson; I can't change anyone but myself....... I only hope you have learnt it too. "

That was my life changing moment...I transformed...I faced the moon and thanked my lucky stars.

I need some advice

As I have told you I have been seeing some changes lately.

Life is moving on, sometimes quicker than I thought possible.

My darling sister is moving out. She is able, in the current market, to buy herself a lovely little flat by the sea...I am slightly green around the edges, but more happy for her than green!

This means that I have a lovely, light and bright room which has Vintage Magpie written all over it. This is where the change comes in. Due to this The Nest in Lewes is having to be packed up and yet again moved back into my flat, which if you remember I, only 6 months ago, moved out of said flat!! Who says life should be easy....or as my Ma says ....it would be boring if it was easy!

So my days of making pretty window displays are again put on hold!

But to be honest, I'm looking forward it immensely. Plus me and The Wonderful Dutchman get a huge big bedroom...Oh the joy...a bed we can walk around!! Bliss.

So as my personal life is having a move about, Vintage Magpie is following closely behind. Which in true Emma Style...got me thinking....

...I need some advice....from you my blogger friends...I hope you can help me out.

I want to test the waters with an idea I have...

... What would you think if I offered a 'DIY bride silk bouquet' 1 to 2 day course...would anyone be interested?

I feel I would love to help those brides out who maybe want to make their own bouquet have all the vintage goodies, but are unsure on how to do it.

This is not a course designed for people who, like others, are trying to...COPY! But one to help and guide a bride through a totally satisfying process, one which will see her making a unique item for her day.

I really want to share my knowledge and skills with others, and to be able to give a Bride a smile on her face knowing she has made her own, beautiful, and personal bouquet. Something she can be proud of...and that has an even more wonderful story to it.

I really would love to know what you think of this idea. I would love for everyone to comment on this post...you don't have to have a blog...you can do it anonymously, with just an email address...so nothing should be stopping you!!

I really appreciate your words, and input. Thank you so much for your help. xxx

Changes...

Do you ever get the feeling that ideas, and inspiration comes in waves? Sometimes I find my brain runs away with me... and then I get excited and want to tell you lovely bloggers everything...but then the reality hits... maybe I need to work this out before I go promising something I cannot deliver.

There are a few things that are changing around here...its exciting...but I'm not quite ready to tell you.... will you be patient with me? Will you wait with baited breath?
I know...it's like Christmas... do you ever want to give a gift early...see their face...'I hope you like it!'

New ideas...

For a while now I have been wanting to try new ideas, but that little thing called time was never there. The most amazing fact about having a workshop is that you get to sit and play all day!

The Nest is proving to be an inspiration. Having all your bits and bobs to hand, never having to roam the flat trying to remember where I have put something. The fact that I have opening hours and simply have to be there is the best discipline a girl could have!

In the last week I have made; necklaces, bag/mobile phone charms, cake toppers, ring pillows and fascinators!

The skill of taking a photo of your head was lost on me... I must have looked an idiot in the shop today. But at least the fascinator looks good!! Unlike my nose...The Wonderful Dutch Man said that I must have been telling lies...... the cheek!! I'm blaming the angle!

My 'Hello lucky sailor boy' bag/mobile charm.
£10

My 'Oh La La Paris' Necklace
£28

As I have told you before 'The Secret' is a huge source of positive energy for me. This was my word of wisdom this morning.

Enjoy your weekend xxx

The Nest

Well here she is.... The Nest.... Vintage Magpie's first ever workshop!!

I couldn't believe my luck when I got to The Needlemakers this morning. I walked into my nest, and was hit by the most glorious morning sunshine. She has the most sparkling light... add in some Vintage Magpie sparkle and rainbows of light were dancing across the walls and floor... I took this to be a good omen!

An old child's chair is a great display. An old discoloured butter dish to hold my business cards.

Every girl needs to Wish....

The fabulous light, jars of buttons, and an old shoe shop mirror.

My huge worktable... Thanks to a thrifty Grandfather...Vintage Magpie has never had so much space!

I have to admit that I have had a few doubtful thoughts... Is it going to work? Will people come to see me? Am I doing the right thing, at the right time?

Then I just remember that life is not for the faint hearted....follow your bliss girl.... be strong... What's the worst that can happen?

So Vintage Magpie has taken another step into the unknown... And I'm going to enjoy the ride!!

Saturday the 4th April is the grand opening... come and enjoy a cupcake or three... wear something sparkly... you will shine like a star! xxx
